Mountain rivers for water sports enthusiasts. Numerous mountain rivers with a steep slope attract water sports enthusiasts, especially whitewater kayaking. They are also rich in valuable species of fish, e.g.. barramundi, therefore they are also an attraction for anglers. The long beaches of the east coast are also a magnet. Tourists can go on a trip through the wilderness to the north of the peninsula, crossing numerous rivers along the way and admiring the original local nature. The most interesting parts of it are protected in many national parks, like Lakefield (swamp areas with numerous species of birds), Rockeby, Archer Bend, Jardine River (attractive mountain areas and picturesque stretches of rivers), Iron Rangę i Cape Tribulation (seaside landscapes). Cairns is the largest center and tourist base, which has an international airport and rail link to Brisbane. Excursions can be organized from here, both deep into the peninsula, and the Coral Sea. There are also paragliding opportunities here, rope jumping and horse riding. The city has a museum and gallery with collections of aboriginal art. A significant tourist destination is the modern resort complex in Port Douglas.
