Punta Arenas

Punta ArenasThe southernmost city on the main continent of South America is Punta Arenas. Admittedly, the official end-of-the-world plaques are in Ushuaia, on Tierra del Fuego, it is for many ships the last port before the real Antarctic ice wasteland. However, it is not necessary to go to the Seventh Continent, to see animals associated only with the ice sheet. In the southern tip of Chile, a species called the Magellanic penguin not only likes to lie in the grass, but it also lays eggs in burrows. The educational trail protects not only penguins from being obsessed with people, but it is also supposed to work the other way around. You should be careful and if only a bird approaches us with its head tilted to the side, pretending to be curious, then you have to run away as quickly as possible. His bites are very painful and it is better not to get in his way.

Most tourists go to one of the most beautiful national parks in the world – Torres del Paine (Paine Towers). That was the name of the Welsh climber. However, linguists argue, that the name comes from the Indian Mapuche language and means light blue. This may refer to the color of many lakes abundant in its area.

The landscape of the national park is incredibly beautiful. Meadows and grasses give way to shrubs. New lakes and the glaciers themselves appear all the time. Some tiny and inconspicuous are preparing to meet the Gray Glacier. A large glacier is stunning in its size. To get a good look at him, you have to climb the rocky and very windy John Gamer Pass. Only height 1300 meters, and the valley is filled with a sea of ice. This sight accompanies me throughout my journey. Just above the white line, it is green and only occasionally scares the stumps of dry trees.
